Save time and effort building an insulated floor that lasts with Norlite Perlite Insulation
When it comes to ensuring the longevity and energy efficiency of your floors, using Norlite Perlite insulation is an excellent choice. This construction method offers durability and excellent insulation. In this article, we will guide you through the process of building reinforced concrete floors with Norlite Perlite insulation, which helps you save both time and effort compared to using other insulation materials.
Materials Needed:
- Concrete: A minimum of 50 mm thick concrete slab is required. The thickness may vary depending on the expected load-bearing capacity. Reinforced concrete may be used for added strength.
- Fiber Cloth: A layer of fiber cloth is essential for structural support.
- Norlite Perlite: This is the primary insulation material, known for its outstanding thermal and sound insulation properties.
- Metal reinforcement: To give the concrete extra strength, we advise you to use metal mesh reinforcement and plastic battens to raise the mesh to around the middle of the concrete slab.
- Optional Heating Pipes and Cables: If you plan on installing underfloor heating, ensure that heating pipes and cables are installed on the metal mesh.
- Moisture Barrier (Optional): If necessary, a moisture barrier can be added to prevent moisture-related issues.
Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Prepare the terrain before insulation:
Consider installing a moisture barrier if you are concerned with underground water raising up through your insulation. You do not need to level the ground before adding your Norlite Perlite Insulation as it will form the level base upon which you will construct your concrete floor. This helps you save time compared with other insulation materials as Norlite is a 2-in-1 solution (surface levelling + insulation).
2. Apply Norlite Perlite Insulation:
Pour Norlite Perlite insulation in the amount needed to get the insulation values you are looking for. Most home owners are happy with 300-400 mm of insulation. If you are in doubt how to calculate u-values from your insulation you can find a calculator on http://www.vif-isolering.dk.
3. Make the insulation more compact:
Use a plank of wood or another flat object and use your body weight to press the perlite everywhere to ensure it is relatively solid so that you can walk on it. Then gently walk all over it ensuring there are no pockets of unsettled perlite insulation. Finally, dress the surface until it is flat and level.
4. Lay fiber cloth:
Place a layer of fiber cloth on top of the evenly dressed perlite insulation. This adds structural support for the next levels of your floor.
5. Place concrete reinforcement:
Now place plastic battens to raise the metal mesh around the middle of your concrete slab (to be poured next).
6. Pour the concrete:
You are now ready to pour your concrete at the level you want. We recommend 100mm of concrete floor, but we have seen floors made with less.
